GLP-1 medications need to be stored carefully to stay effective.
Unopened pens
- Store in the fridge at 2°C to 8°C
- Keep in the original box to protect from light
- Do not freeze — frozen medication must not be used
- Don't store near the back of the fridge or against the wall, where it's coldest
Once you've started using a pen
- You can keep it at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 28 days
- Or continue to store it in the fridge — your choice
- Do not put a pen back in the fridge once it has been at room temperature — pick one method and stick with it
- Keep the cap on between injections
- Discard after 28 days even if there's medication left
Travelling with your medication
- Use a cool bag with ice packs for journeys over a few hours
- Always carry it in hand luggage when flying — never in the hold (luggage holds can freeze)
- Take a copy of your prescription paperwork when travelling abroad
If you're not sure whether your medication has been stored correctly, message your clinical team before injecting.
