Why do my burps smell like eggs?

Some members experience burps that smell like rotten eggs or sulphur on GLP-1 medication. It's not dangerous, but it's unpleasant — and it's more common than people realise.

Why it happens

The medication slows how quickly food leaves your stomach. When certain foods sit longer than usual, gut bacteria produce hydrogen sulphide — that's the eggy smell.

What helps

  • Avoid foods high in sulphur — red meat (especially in large portions), eggs, dairy, garlic, onions, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage) in large quantities
  • Eat smaller, lighter meals — particularly in the evening
  • Avoid fizzy drinks — they make it worse
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Don't lie down right after eating

Short-term options

If it's really bothering you, antacids with simeticone (like Rennie Deflatine or Wind-Eze) can help break up the trapped gas. Speak to your Bliss clinical team before taking anything regularly.

For most people, this side effect eases within a few weeks once your body adjusts.
