Constipation is a common side effect — it makes sense, because the medication slows down how food moves through your digestive system. The good news is it's very manageable.
Daily habits that help
- Drink more water — aim for at least 2 litres a day, more if you're active
- Eat fibre with every meal — wholegrains, beans, lentils, fruit (especially pears, apples, kiwi, prunes), vegetables, nuts and seeds
- Move daily — even a 20-minute walk helps your gut move
- Don't ignore the urge — go when your body tells you to
Quick fixes
- A kiwi fruit a day (genuinely well-evidenced)
- Two or three prunes in the morning
- A tablespoon of ground flaxseed or chia seeds in yoghurt or porridge
- Warm water with lemon first thing
If those aren't enough
Over-the-counter laxatives are safe to use short term. The most appropriate options are usually:
- Osmotic laxatives like Macrogol (Movicol, Laxido) — gentle and effective
- Bulk-forming fibre like Fybogel (psyllium husk)
Avoid stimulant laxatives (senna, bisacodyl) for more than a few days at a time without speaking to us. If you're constipated for more than a week despite trying these steps, message your clinical team.
